Since 2002, the number of Americans who have a primary care provider has been decreasing. A 2019 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine highlighted this troubling trend in the United States that seems to be getting worse. In 2015, 25 percent of Americans did not have a healthcare provider they could call if they became sick or wanted to discuss preventive care.

At The Good Clinic, our mission is to be your partner in overcoming sickness and help in your pursuit of improved health. We are redefining primary care, making it accessible, convenient, and personalized. We care for you when you are sick, but we also focus on working with you to keep you well. One way we do this is by staffing our clinics with experienced and knowledgeable certified nurse practitioners (CNPs). They have excellent skills in partnering with clients to help them achieve their goals. Currently, 23 states and the District of Columbia allow “full independent practice,” which means that CNPs are finally recognized for their training, knowledge, and experience as primary care providers.

What is a Nurse Practitioner?

Nurse practitioners (NPs) are advanced degreed registered nurses who have completed advanced education and clinical training at the master’s or doctoral level. They have combined this training with their many years of practical patient experience. They all pass a national certification exam in their areas of focus, including pediatrics, women’s health, adult/geriatrics, and family practice.

NPs deliver safe, skilled, high-quality care. They diagnose and manage acute and chronic conditions and advocate for patients, focusing on health promotion and disease prevention. They invest time with you and listen to your concerns and goals.

Here are some of the services NPs are qualified to provide:

  • order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests such as lab work and x-rays;
  • diagnose and treat acute conditions such as infections and injuries;
  • diagnose and manage chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and anxiety;
  • prescribe medications and other treatments;
  • refer to specialty providers as needed.
